5 ways to improve your memory

Losing keys, forgetting names and not remembering important information for work or study? For most of us, memory lapses aren't a sign of a serious illness but they are nonetheless frustrating. Thankfully, you can boost your recall.

Pay attention and avoid distractions

One reason we forget things is that we never fully processed them into our memory in the first place. To encode a long-term memory in your brain, you need to actively attend to the information. Sometimes, simply reminding yourself to focus on the task at hand – say meeting someone new and learning their name – is all that's needed. However, stating what you're doing out loud can also help memory – eg "I'm putting my glasses on the kitchen table". If you're trying to process more complex information, try minimising distractions like television or phone calls.

Write or record new information

Another way to help yourself stay focused on learning something new is to take a more active role – such as by writing or recording important points. Taking study notes for instance is generally more effective than simply reading or listening to a body of information. Keeping a pen and notebook (or using your smartphone) can be handy to record things, like say, where you parked your car in a large shopping centre car park.

Group things together

Organising information into groups makes memorising easier. That's why we often recite phone numbers in clusters of three or four digits. Grouping can also make what you're learning less "abstract" and give structure to the recall process. For example, if you have forgotten your shopping list try to recall items by types of products (i.e. dairy, stationary, toiletries).

Develop association techniques

Developing associations – say with a relevant image, acronym, sentence (acrostic) or rhyme – is another memory boosting trick. These memory clues are called mnemonics. For instance, the sentence "Every Good Boy Deserves Fruit" can be used to remember the notes on the lines of a treble clef in music (E, G, B, D, F). Likewise, when you meet someone new called Rosemary, creating a mental image of her face smelling the herb rosemary can make it more likely you will remember her name.

Avoid memory lapse triggers

Fatigue and alcohol are two known triggers for memory lapse, so avoiding these can help in situations where you need to stay sharp. Aim to get a good night's sleep before an exam and if important information is likely to be exchanged at say, a work lunch, consider sticking to non-alcoholic drinks.

11.15 am: Sydney radio host speaks to hostage

A Sydney-based radio presenter Monday said he spoke to one of the hostages being held inside a cafe here and he could hear the gunman talking in the background.

"The male hostage was remarkably calm when relaying information over the phone from the gunman," said Ray Hadley, a radio presenter of 2GB, a commercial radio station here.

Hadley said he could hear the gunman talking in the background during the phone conversation, Sydney Morning Herald reported.

The gunman wanted the hostage to speak live on radio, a demand Hadley claimed to have refused.

"I told the hostage it would not be in his best interest or my best interest to allow that to happen because I'm not a trained negotiator, I don't have any expertise in this, there are people who will talk to both the hostages and the person holding the hostages and they will be knowing what to do," said Hadley.

Hadley said he has spoken to New South Wales Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione about the phone call and Scipione asked him not to allow the hostage to speak on air.

Hadley claimed the gunman was talking about "other operatives being involved", and said he was instructed to call back.

"They talked about a password they would give me...I have no idea what that means, what it's about," Hadley said. सिडनी: एक हथियारबंद व्यक्ति द्वारा आज ऑस्ट्रेलिया के चर्चित कैफे में कई लोगों को बंधक बनाए जाने के बाद ऑस्ट्रेलिया में सुरक्षा कड़ी कर दी गई। हथियारबंद व्यक्ति ने आज ऑस्ट्रेलिया के मार्टिन प्लेस स्थित मशहूर कैफे लिंड्ट चॉकलेट कैफे में अनेक लोगों को बंधक बना लिया और उसकी खिड़की पर अरबी लिपि में लिखा इस्लामी झंडा भी लहराया।

अधिकारियों ने कैफे के इर्दगिर्द की सड़कें बंद कर दी है और निकट की इमारतों से लोगों को हटा लिया। शहर के कारोबारी इलाके के मध्य में स्थित कैफे की इस घटना के बाद रेल सेवा भी निलंबित कर दी गई। सिडनी के मध्य में होने के कारण मार्टिन प्लेस को संसदीय, कानूनी और खुदरा इलाके के संगम के तौर पर जाना जाता है और इसके कारण यहां आम लोगों की गहमागहमी बनी रहती है।

टेलीविजन फुटेज में यह दिख रहा है कि कैफे की खिड़की पर काला झंडा लगा है और लोग खिड़के पे हाथ टिकाए खड़े हैं। यह ‘इस्लामिक स्टेट’ झंडा नहीं है, बल्कि नमाजों में रोजाना इस्तेमाल होने वाला झंडा है। लिंड्ट ऑस्ट्रेलिया के कार्यकारी का कहना है कि कैफे में करीब 10 कर्मी और 30 ग्राहक फंसे हुए हैं। पुलिस ने बंधकों की संख्या के बारे में बयान देने से इनकार कर दिया।

न्यू साउथ वेल्स के पुलिस कमिश्नर एंड्रयू साइपियोन ने बताया कि मामले में सिर्फ एक बंदूकधारी शामिल है। उन्होंने बताया, ‘मैं आपको इस बात की पुष्टि कर सकता हूं कि शहर के मार्टिन प्लेस इलाका स्थित कैफे में एक हथियारबंद अपराधी ने परिसर के अंदर कई सारे लोगों को बंधक बना लिया है।’ हालांकि उन्होंने यह साफ किया कि पुलिस बंधक बनाने वाले के साथ सीधे तौर पर संपर्क में नहीं है।

उन्होंने कहा, ‘मेरा मानना है कि हमारा इस हथियारबंद व्यक्ति से संपर्क नहीं रहा है और हम अब तक यह बताने की स्थिति में नहीं हैं कि व्यक्ति कहां का है?’ साइपियोन ने बताया कि फिलहाल पुलिस इसे बंधक मामले के तौर पर देख रही है लेकिन वह इसे ‘‘आतंकवादी गतिविधि के रूप में भी देख रही है।’’ उन्होंने बताया, ‘‘जरूरत पड़ने पर हम शांति बहाल करने के लिए जब तक जरूरी होगा काम करते रहेंगे।’’ मार्टिन प्लेस, सिडनी ओपेरा हाउस, स्टेट लाइब्रेरी और सभी अदालतों को खाली करा लिया गया है।

ऑस्ट्रेलियाई प्रधानमंत्री टोनी एबट ने अपने कैबिनेट के सुरक्षा मामलों के अधिकारियों के साथ बैठक की और बंधक मामले पर कार्रवाई पर चर्चा की। एबॅट ने कहा, ‘जाहिर तौर पर यह गंभीर चिंता का मामला है लेकिन सभी ऑस्ट्रेलिया वासियों को मैं आश्वस्त करना चाहता हूं कि हमारी कानून प्रवर्तन और सुरक्षा एजेंसियों को बेहतर प्रशिक्षण प्राप्त है तथा वे हथियारों से लैस हैं एवं वे बेहद पेशेवर अंदाज में पेश आ रही हैं।’

इस बीच पांच बंधक बाहर निकलने में सफल रहे हैं जहां एक बूंकधारी ने कई लोगों को बंधक बना लिया है। वहां खिड़की पर एक इस्लामी झंडा भी लटका देखा गया है । न्यू साउथ वेल्स की उपायुक्त कैथरीन बर्न ने बताया कि मार्टिन प्लेस स्थित लिंड्ट कैफे से बाहर आए तीन लोग पुलिस के साथ हैं । चैनल-7 पर तीन लोग - एक स्टाफ सदस्य तथा दो अन्य कैफे से भाग कर बाहर आते देखे गए ।

कैथरीन ने कहा, ‘मेरे पास जो सूचना है, वह यह है कि अभी किसी को भी कोई नुकसान नहीं पहुंचा है या घायल नहीं हुआ है ।’ उन्होंने कहा, ‘‘हम स्पष्ट तौर पर ऐसी स्थिति से निपट रहे हैं जो विकसित हो रही है और सबसे महत्वपूर्ण चीज उन बंधकों की सुरक्षा है तथा मैं मैं ऐसा कुछ नहीं करना चाहूंगी जिससे उन बंधकों की सुरक्षा पर असर पड़े ।’ कैथरीन ने कहा कि वह कैफे में मौजूद लोगों की संख्या की पुष्टि नहीं कर सकतीं। सिडनी में सुरक्षा एहतियात के तौर पर मार्टिन प्लेस के नजदीक अमेरिकी वाणिज्य दूतावास और अन्य इमारतों को खाली करा लिया गया है।

आतंकवादी हमलों के लिए प्रशिक्षित सुरक्षार्मियों, अन्य अधिकारियों सहित सैकड़ों पुलिसकर्मियों को वहां भेज दिया गया है और यातायात पुलिस अधिकारी सड़कों पर नजर बनाए हुए हैं। समूचे शहर में हजारों कर्मियों को घर जल्दी भेज दिया गया और शहर की कई प्रमुख इमारतों को खाली करा लिया गया है।

After Modi's appeal, United Nations to declare June 21 as World Yoga Day today

New Delhi: In a proud moment for India, the United Nations will declare June 21 as World Yoga Day on Thursday after Prime Minister Narendra Modi had urged the world community to celebrate Indian yoga at the international level in his speech at the United Nations General Assembly in September.

The decision is being seen as a huge diplomatic win for India. 170 nations had supported Modi's proposal. European Union president Herman Van Rompuy had also told Modi in November that the 28-member EU supported his idea for a Yoga Day at the UN.

"Three months ago, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had appealed to the world community that India's yoga should be celebrated as World Yoga Day. I am happy to inform you that we have received support of 170 nations and four days from today, the United Nations will declare June 21 as the World Yoga Day," Swaraj had said on last week.

आर्थिक रूप से कमजोर परिवारों की बीमार बेटियों का अब बेहतर इलाज हो सकेगा। खासतौर से उनका जो हार्ट संबंधी बीमारी से ग्रसित हैं। जो लोग पैसों की कमी के चलते बच्चियों के हार्ट का इलाज नहीं करा पाते उनका इलाज एनजीओ और प्राइवेट हॉस्पिटल मिलकर करेंगे।

बुधवार को मुख्यमंत्री मनोहर लाल खट्टर ने इस कैंपेन की शुरुआत की। वह सिटी के एक नामी अस्पताल में आयोजित कार्यक्रम में हिस्सा लेने आए थे। उन्होंने कहा कि बेटियां अनमोल हैं, दिल से बचाओ, दिल को बचाओ। हरियाणा में लिंग अनुपात में काफी असंतुलन है, जिसे ठीक करने के लिए महिलाओं को आगे आना होगा। प्रदेश में लाडली नामक योजना चल रही है लेकिन वह नाकाफी है। एक सवाल के जवाब में सीएम ने कहा कि प्राइवेट हॉस्पिटलों को सस्ते दर पर जमीन इसलिए दी जाती है कि वे अपने यहां गरीब लोगों का फ्री इलाज करें। ऐसा न होने की शिकायतें मिल रही हैं। अवहेलना करने वालों को नोटिस भेजा जाएगा।

इस मौके पर हार्ट केयर फांउडेशन ऑफ इंडिया के अध्यक्ष डॉ. के. के. अग्रवाल ने बताया कि सैकड़ों बच्चियां दिल की बीमारी के चलते सिर्फ इसलिए जीवित नहीं रह पातीं क्योंकि उनके इलाज का खर्च परिवार वहन नहीं कर सकता। मेदांता के साथ मिलकर उनकी फाउंडेशन गरीब परिवारों के बच्चों की हार्ट सर्जरी फ्री करेगी। जो परिवार जितना खर्च उठाने में सक्षम होंगे उतना देंगे बाकी फाउंडेशन देगा। जिन्हें इलाज न नहीं मिल पाता है उनकी जानकारी काई भी हेल्पलाइन नंबर-09958771177 पर दे सकता है।

Hry plans campaign to protect girl child

Prime Minister Narendra Modi may address a women’s rally in Haryana on January 22 with a view to start a campaign for protecting the girl child, chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar said on Wednesday.

The nationwide campaign will be flagged off from Haryana considering the low sex ratio in the state. The CM made the announcement while launching an initiative in Gurgaon for providing free treatment to women heart patients.

Medanta - The Medicity with Heart Care Foundation of India, launched the ‘ Betiyan Hain Anmol, Bachao Dil’ Se Campaign on Wednesday. “Our government and the Centre are committed to providing a safe environment and better education to women. The PM may also address a rally here on January 22,” said Khattar.

As part of the campaign, chairman and managing director of Medanta, Dr Naresh Trehan operated upon 300 patients.

Hundreds of girls in Haryana die of heart diseases as they cannot afford treatment. “The campaign will focus on the daughters of Haryana who often lose their life battle to the sons of the family,” said Dr KK Aggarwal, president, Heart Care Foundation of India and secretary general elect the Indian Medical Association.

Trehan also sought help from the state to set up a 400-bed children’s hospital for specialised heart care in Gurgaon. Girls suffering from heart diseases can apply for the benefits of the fund by calling on its helpline number +919958771177 or log on to heartcarefoundation.org. HTC

बेटियों को बचाने के लिए सरकार प्रतिबद्ध

जागरण संवाददाता, गुड़गांव: हरियाणा के मुख्यमंत्री मनोहर लाल खट्टर ने कहा कि बेटियों को बचाने की मुहिम और गरीबों को बेहतर स्वास्थ्य सुविधाएं मुहैया कराने के लिए सरकार प्रतिबद्ध है। उन्होंने इस सूबे के बड़े अस्पतालों और गैर सरकारी संगठनों से इस कार्य में सहयोगी भूमिका में आगे आने की अपील की।

मुख्यमंत्री बुधवार को मेदांता अस्पताल में 'बेटियां हैं अनमोल, बचाओ दिल से' अभियान के उद्घाटन समारोह को संबोधित कर रहे थे। उन्होंने भरोसा दिलाया कि सरकार से रियायती दर में जमीन लेने वाले बड़े अस्पतालों में गरीबी रेखा के नीचे के लोगों का मुफ्त इलाज सुनिश्चित किया जाएगा। साथ ही कहा कि सरकार जल्द ही बेटियों के लिए कुछ योजनाओं की घोषणा करेगी। प्रधानमंत्री ने भी महिलाओं के एक बड़े सम्मेलन की बात की है, जो 22 जनवरी को हो सकता है। इसमें कन्या भ्रूण हत्या रोकने में माताओं से समर्थ भूमिका निभाने की अपील की जाएगी। बेटियां हर तरह से सशक्त हों यह पूरी कोशिश हरियाणा सरकार की होगी। उन्होंने मेदांता समेत तमाम बड़े अस्पतालों में निश्शुल्क हार्ट सर्जरी की योजना से ग्रामीण इलाकों की बेटियों को लाभान्वित करने का भरोसा दिलाया।

सत्र को संबोधित करते हुए हार्ट केयर फाउंडेशन ऑफ इंडिया के अध्यक्ष डा. केके अग्रवाल ने कहा कि हरियाणा में जन्म लेने वाली हृदय रोग ग्रस्त बेटियों का भारतीय हार्ट केयर फाउंडेशन और मेदांता अस्पताल निश्शुल्क इलाज करेगा। प्रधानमंत्री फंड, मुख्यमंत्री की आरोग्य निधि और अन्य गैर सरकारी संगठन इसमें सहयोग करेंगे। अग्रवाल ने बताया कि पिछले एक साल में उन्होंने 300 बच्चों के हार्ट के ऑपरेशन निश्शुल्क किए हैं, जिसमें हार्ट सर्जन डा. नरेश त्रेहन की महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका है। उनका संकल्प कि यह संगठन हर रोज एक गरीब हृदय रोगी बच्चे की मदद करेगा। मेदांता के सीएमडी डा. नरेश त्रेहन ने मुख्यमंत्री के सामने बच्चों के लिए एक 500 बेड का अस्पताल बनाने के लिए रियायती दर पर जमीन की मांग रखी। यह अस्पताल गैर लाभकारी होगा और इसमें बीपीएल बच्चों का इलाज निश्शुल्क होगा। इसमें इलाज के लिए विश्व की सारी सुविधाएं उपलब्ध होगी। मेदांता फाउंडेशन ने इसके लिए 50 करोड़ रुपए भी एकत्र कर लिए है।
